Five Questions


1    1.  What is the meaning of the Magistrate’s reoccurring dream involving the hooded girl and the snow?
2.       Why do you think that the Empire sets the Magistrate free eventually and does not pursue a trial?
3.       Why do the Magistrate’s views on the barbarians differ so greatly from the rest of the officials of the Empire?
4.       What is the meaning of the Magistrate’s increased sexual desire at the end of the novel? (page 173).  Why does he work to suppress it?
5.       Discuss the ending of the novel; especially what is the significance between the Magistrate’s dream and the children building the snowman?
